WAYNE, Illinois, Aug. 23–Vitalis, who represented the United States at the World Young Horse Championships in Germany two weeks ago, moved a step closer to becoming America’s six-year-old champion when ridden by owner Charlotte Jorst to a dominating performance in the preliminary competition Friday.

Charlotte of Reno, Nevada and the KWPN stallion were awarded 9.7 for trot, 7.8 for walk and 9.5 for canter as well as 10 for submission and 9 for general impression that gave Vitalis (Vivaldi x Donnerschwee) a total of 9.2.

“We could not have thought of anything to make it better,” Janet Foy commented on behalf of the ground jury on the 10 for subission.

Alice Tarjan of Oldwick, New Jersey rode her Elfenfeuer, an Oldenburg gelding (Florencio x Sion), to second place with a score of 7.940 made up of 8.5 for trot, 8.6 for canter and 5.9 for walk as well as 9 for submission and 7.7 for general impression.

Jane Karol of Concord, Massachusetts and Sunshine Tour (Sir Donnerhall x Alabaster) placed third on a score of 7.8. The Oldenburg mare scored 9.2 for trot, 7.3 for walk and 7.2 for canter and 7.0 for submission and 8.0 for general impression.

Wakeup, the six-year-old U.S. champion in 2011, was ridden by owner Emily Wagner of LaCygne, Kansas to victory in the Developing Prix St. Georges preliminary test with a score of 73.465 per cent.

“I really loved the flow of the movements,” said Emily of the ride on the American homebred (Wagnis x Macho) now eight years old. “There were no hiccups; it felt super solid.”

Charlotte Jorst and Adventure (Special D x Mandrain) placed second on 69.868 per cent while Silva Martin of Unionville, Pennsylvania and Rosa Cha (Regardez Moi x Richmeed Medallion) were third on 69.605 per cent.
